چکیده
Abstract This paper investigates the historical loss of root-initial consonants, using a case study Middle Paman languages Cape York Peninsula, in northeastern Australia. Systematic initial consonants is typologically unusual phenomenon, mainly found Australia, that has often been regarded as starting point for far-reaching changes root structure, phonotactics and even phoneme inventory. So far, literature focused on identifying phonetic causes loss. focuses actual processes pathways loss, which an equally important part puzzle. Specifically, it shows there are multiple loss: can be result gradual process involving intermediate steps like lenition, assumed literature, but also due to more abrupt borrowing morphosyntactic alternations. adds diversified model how actually proceeds, together with earlier work diversity produces comprehensive understanding this diachronically phenomenon.

Consonant recognition loss in hearing impaired listeners.
This paper presents a compact graphical method for comparing the performance of individual hearing impaired (HI) listeners with that of an average normal hearing (NH) listener on a consonant-by-consonant basis. This representation, named the consonant loss profile (CLP), characterizes the effect of a listener's hearing loss on each consonant over a range of performance. The CLP shows that the c...
متن کاملConsonant-vowel cohesiveness in speech production as revealed by initial and final consonant exchanges
Two experiments use a procedure developed by Carter and Bradshaw (1984) to examine the role of syllable structure in speech production. In the procedure, subjects exchange phonological segments in corresponding positions of a pair of visuallypresented words or nonwords and to produce the resulting words or nonwords as quickly as possible. Carter and Bradshaw had shown that the pattern of latenc...
متن کاملVoiced initial consonant perception deficits in older listeners with hearing loss and good and poor word recognition.
PURPOSE This study examined differences in voiced consonant-vowel (CV) perception in older listeners with normal hearing and in 2 groups of older listeners with matched hearing losses: those with good and those with poor word recognition scores. METHOD Thirty-six participants identified CVs from an 8-item display from the natural voiced initial consonants/b, d, g, m, n, eth, v and z/in three ...
متن کاملConsonant confusions in patients with sensorineural hearing loss.
Consonant confusion matrices were obtained from 22 outpatient listeners with sensorineural hearing loss for four sets of CV and VC nonsense syllables, presented monaurally at SRT + 40 DB. Testing was typically conducted for six hours on each of two separate days. Overall performance and patterns of confusions were stable over time. Analysis of the matrices in terms of phonological features indi...
متن کاملThe effect of visual information on word initial consonant perception of dysarthric speech
Disabled individuals will realize many benefits from automatic speech recognition. To date, most automatic speech recognition research has focused on normal speech. However, many individuals with physical disabilities also exhibit speech disorders. While limited research has been conducted focusing on dysarthric speech recognition, the preliminary results indicate that additional study is neces...
